"On April 9, 2008, a hot Butuan summer day, 315 families, mostly poor and
struggling to keep body and soul together, suffered another of fate's hard
knocks. They became victims of a fire that reduced to cinders, their dwellings,
a total of 225, many of them patch works of light materials. The fire had
started at about 9:30 a.m., and spread like wild fire.
...Several fire trucks responded, including those from the neighboring
municipalities. But by then, the fire had spread...and engulfed many
dwellings...the narrow roads, mostly mere pedestrian alleys, hindered the entry
of fire trucks...This was the squatter area, and the homes and roads were
haphazardly built without rhyme or reason. The firemen still did their best...
A few days later, as the gravity of the situation reached...the Ivory Charities
Foundation, Inc., an emergency meeting was called...to discuss the plight of our
fellow Butuanons, and what assistance could be given the fire victims. This
charity work will be a fulfillment of Ivory Charities Foundation's motto:
BUTUANONS HELPING BUTUANONS.
The distribution of rice and noodles to the fies victims took place at
the Jose T. Domingo Elementary School in Barangay Limaha where most of them
were temporarily housed. "

A similar article, written by Elmo Montilla appeared in the front page of the
recent issue of the Mindanao News Courier.
The funds of Ivory Charities Foundation, Inc., are mostly donations from
Butuanons residing in the United States.
