Job Description
The Fairmont Hotel seeks an Assistant Grounds and Equipment Manager to support in overseeing grounds maintenance, landscaping, and equipment management. Responsibilities include supervising the Groundskeeping team, maintaining consistent and clear communication between the Grounds and Equipment Manager and the executive team within the hotel, maintaining high standards for outdoor areas. The ideal candidate has previous landscaping experience, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and excellence.
What You'll Be Doing
- Plan and design attractive and environmentally friendly landscape projects for summer operations which demonstrate an understanding of alpine horticulture and balance with the impact of the department’s wintertime snow clearing and event operation.
- Prepared and capable of working in extreme weather and cold conditions (-50C or colder) throughout winter season.
- Plan and coordinate the construction of natural rink surfaces totaling 90,000 square feet (about the area of a Manhattan city block), an on-ground curling rink, and the main structure of the hotel’s ice bar.
- Plan, coordinate, and balance seasonal events (Ice Magic carving competition, Pond Hockey Tournament, Ice Bar and Ice Castle build, other events as needed) with an understanding of their operational and environmental impact.
- Effective planning and use of resources - expense management and budget controls.
- Colleague performance management, development - including selection and training.
- ·00 % accident-free workplace - with safety a proactive part of getting the job done.
- Exterior property facilities maintained allowing for Colleague and Guest safety - giving attention and having the foreknowledge of seasonal environmental dangers, including safety procedures for operating on natural ice rink surfaces, operation of heavy equipment through crowds, overhead roof hazard clearing.
- Strategy developed for winter removal of snow and ice, including work at height requirements and natural ice rink snow clearing safety.
- Development of standards - operating procedures and service policies that address the needs of all Guests and Colleagues.
- Ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement and work with the CAW in establishing a working relationship.
- Maintenance and effective use of hotel grounds equipment and vehicles – proficiency and capable of training effective operators in a variety of heavy equipment (plow truck, skid steer, front end loader, etc.) in variable conditions and environments (ice rink surfaces, roads, pathways).
- Contribute to hotel leadership team through networking, attendance at Leadership meetings and informal gatherings.
- Advertise and educate all Colleagues on grounds activities impacting the hotel.
- Assistance in the set up and removal of outdoor activities year-round.
- Environmental practices to be an everyday part of how the Grounds Department works.
- Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the hotel health and safety program.
- Adhere to all environmental policies - interpreting and clearing wintertime hazards, performing lawn and garden care, while adhering to the strict environmental policies with the National Park system.
- Coordination with other departments of the hotels for the functions and other jobs as assigned.
- Arranging yearly training for the staff.
- Developing and executing the effective plan for equipment and vehicles repairs under the department's use.
- Arranging and coordinating maintenance and preventative maintenance for all vehicles and equipment under the hotel's use.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Commitment to environmental sustainability.
- Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, vehicle maintenance or related field.
- Valid Alberta driver's license with recent abstract
- Strong problem-solving skills, analytical and strategic thinking is a plus.
