“The 2021 Marshall Fire was the costliest fire in Colorado's history and destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses. The disaster displaced over 40,000 people and damaged six public drinking water systems. The fire caused all water systems to lose power. Power loss was sometimes coupled with structure destruction, distribution depressurization, and the failure of backup power systems. These consequences jeopardized fire‐fighting support and allowed for volatile organic compound and semi‐volatile organic compound contamination of water distribution systems. Water system staff, with help from neighboring systems and external technical experts, stabilized the infrastructure, found and removed the contamination, and restored services. Actions were identified for utilities, governments, and researchers that could help communities minimize wildfire impacts, better protect workers and the population, and enable water systems to more rapidly respond and recover.”#MarshallFire #Megafire #Firemitigation #Colorado #infrastructure https://lnkd.in/gfD6NStd

Certainly, public safety first. By all means. That said, restrictive water policies remain in place throughout our state negatively affecting tens of thousands of businesses, homeowners associations, commercial, retail, office and industrial properties as well as negatively affecting community pride. This CNN article associated with Hurricane Hilary reminds us that we need to do a better job in developing water infrastructure such as green-lighting/fast-tracking construction of new reservoirs and other water capturing/retainage projects. More capacity is needed rather than sending mother nature’s liquid gold to the ocean. In the meanwhile, be safe.

FEMA is not a 911 resource. This shouldn’t occur. More municipalities, counties, and states, should invest in ACTUAL emergency/disaster/crisis management programs and resources, and STOP relying on FEMA
