Apart from Doctor Who and Strictly, there is absolutely nothing worth watching on Saturday nights. How many more braindead game shows like Red or Black or Don't Scare the Hare do we have inflicted on us, and how many more rigged singing and talent contests can the television dream up? Whatever happened to decent comedy, good family dramas, escapism like Dempsey and Makepeace and a chat show like Michael Aspel to round off the night. Now all we seem to get is rubbish.

I don't deny it, but the schedule seems infested with them on Saturdays. Also people still watch repeats of The Two Ronnies from thirty years ago, but who seriously would watch a repeat of The X Factor in 30 years time. Saturday night television is just disposable junk in a lot of cases and the absence of decent comedy is a disgrace.

How about the Saturday night Euro-Crime slot on BBC4 which over the past couple of years has feature shows from Sweden, Denmark, France and Italy??

Well i agree no one will watch it. It 30 years as you say X Factor will probally be forgotten but i still do think that People will still watch Dad's Army and the Two Ronnies but times have changed Glenn

You're not making much sense. The X Factor isn't intended to age well. It's a live, one-time thing...comparing it to The Two Ronnies just doesn't work.

There's plenty of decent situation comedy on television, but Saturday nights are not the place for it. Saturday nights are all about big entertainment shows. Some are good, some are bad, some lie in the middle.

I will admit there have been some successes: Doctor Who has had an amazing comeback and Strictly has surprised everyone, but Saturdays don't seem the same as they were in the eighties and nineties. I wish The Gladiators would get a revival and something like CD UK is revived in a teatime slot.

Thing is Glenn with all the programs you want brought back can they get the ratings they had in the past. It is quite said that the 5 big channels can't get the big ratings all the time now and i hope one day the big 5 will get huge ratings again but i don't think it will happen.

I grew up with Saturday night tv in the 70s/early 80's

    Generation Game (Bruce & Larry)
    Opportunity Knocks (Hughie Green)
    The Val Doonican Music Show
    The Mike Yarwood Show
    3-2-1
    Game For a Laugh
    Kojak
    Dallas

Times do change - shows aren't that different really

Opportunity Knocks in the Hughie Green era was on Mondays, but the revival with Bob Monkhouse was on a Saturday. However, I will admit there was some rubbish- the BBC seemed to lose its way a bit in the early 80s and started showing cheap films on Saturdays- but there were some fantastic shows like Dempsey and Makepeace, CATS Eyes, Beadle's About and Saturday Night Live.

Indeed - I was just going to say that. People complain about Sat night rubbish on TV but completely forget about BBC4. That has shown amazing Euro crime dramas for a few years now - there has been something good on basically every Saturday for a long time! I got into watching these when The Killing was shown in Jan this year and have been hooked on them ever since.

For me personally as a comedy fan Friday night TV last night was WAY better, BBC ONE was almost non stop comedy (a bit of a rarity) we had the last ever episode of My Family, the Series 4 opener of Outnumbered, Miranda and then last week's John Bishop's Britain and I think My Favourite Joke, in terms of what I like on TV that lineup knocked the next nights Saturday night crap into a cocked hat. Couldn't find anything I liked last night, the Titanic doc on More4 was about the highlight for me, that and John Bishop's Britain of course which was a welcome alternative to Red or Black/X Factor crap.

Doctor Who is awful these days.

So nothing worth watching apart from crime dramas on ITV3.

BBC Four is aimed at old people and depressing bores. It's a poor channel with nothing worth watching.
